Hug Life 2011
I’ve been in love with yoga for a while now. Hatha Vinyasa was a preference but my own personal practice of yoga has survived many years and body changes. When I attended a yoga class held by a monk some weeks ago, I didn’t expect anything terribly difficult. He started out with what I thought were dreadfully simple exercises. Only they were exercises involving many different planes of movement, and frankly, some dangerous planes of movement. As a PT, I’d balk at the idea of recommending them to a patient. It looked dangerous but we got through it, breathing all the while and repeating everything a number of times. I played along and felt super normal the next day. No muscle soreness. Nothing. Something happened after the second class though; my body felt like it had rocks in place of joints! I’d never encountered such soreness and fatigue. The exercises sounded simple enough. But that’s the key. They weren’t yoga asanas. They were merely strengthening exercises for the real deal. Double leg rotations fifteen times clockwise/anticlockwise (each) with proper breathing can kick start your metabolism like nothing else. We’re talking rotations like you’re drawing the biggest, fattest egg in the air with your extended legs and feet maintained together throughout. All the way up, all the way sidewise, all the way down (hovering over the floor just so) and up again. Stretching exercises for the TFL (sides of your thigh) and quads and hip flexors involving twists that make you wonder!
It was something else. My conclusion was that while I may be able to hold an asana for up to a minute (some strength, mental calm involved) my dynamic strength and endurance left a lot to be desired. I’ve suspended attempting asanas for now! I’ll be working on those abs and thighs before demanding calm from my agitated mind again! I’m sure I’ll slip into meditation and quiet a lot faster if my body cooperates as well.
Just never saw it before!
Geez, that’s ubneleiavlbe. Kudos and such.
I’m Melanie, currently on hiatus from teaching yoga, the Nia Technique and the 5 Stages of Self Healing. I just travelled Thailand and India with intentions to focus on and expand my personal practice, when right at the beginning – Boom! – I broke my foot. So, needless to say, it turned into quite a different journey. I made the most of things, focussed on recovery, and now, I’m relocating to Los Angeles – specifically Silverlake. Another funny story, I was promised my place to be ready – equipt with what will be my mostly empty studio room, to which I was ecstatic to return to. But as remodels often prove, the move in date is STILL delayed. I’m working towards my next teacher training, while mostly regaining proper health, alignment, and fitness after the injury, so this has been quite a shock to me. The good new IS??? Today, I discovered the sunny ROOF top (I’m temporarily staying strangely on the property). It’s a beautiful spread overlooking Hollywood, Echo Park, Silverlake and downtown. It lured me in naturally to an amazing practice in which I came to the conclusion that I will verrrrry likely be LIVE – STREAMING “classes” whether with students, friends, or I’m sure often just me. So this is an INVITE for anyone available to join me, casually, in your own way, at your own speed, to practice, praise and celebrate with me from this quirky rooftop in LA, high and right above the hustle and bustle of it all. What beautiful contract and irony. It just keeps going. Namaste’ from Melanie………………….
welcome to LA Melanie =) Soaring high above on a rooftop is the perfect way to enjoy the beautiful weather!
